The problem this solves
Almost everyone who asks for this is in one of three positions. A tenant whose landlord pays the electricity bill and whose rent agreement was never put in writing. A student or a young employee living with parents, where every bill is in the father's name. Or someone who has recently moved to Vadodara for work and has been resident for two months, which is not long enough to have accumulated any paper at all.
The address affidavit is a sworn statement filling that gap: who you are, the full address you reside at with the pin code, since when, in what capacity — owner, tenant, family member, licensee — and why no conventional proof exists in your name.
Where you live in somebody else's premises, the affidavit is usually paired with a declaration or no-objection statement from the owner of those premises confirming that you reside there with their consent, and attaching their own proof of the address. Your word about your address plus their proof of the address is what most offices are really looking for.
What it does and does not do
The Notary administers the oath — section 8(1)(e) of the Notaries Act, 1952 — and attests it under signature and official seal. That certifies that you appeared and swore the contents. It does not certify that you live there. No notary verifies the address, visits the premises or vouches for the occupancy, and any office that reads the document carefully knows that.
Which is why acceptance varies so much. Some authorities take an address affidavit readily. Others have a fixed list of acceptable address proofs and an affidavit is not on it, in which case no amount of stamp paper helps. Ask the office what is on its list before you spend anything. That single question saves more wasted trips than anything else on this page.
Getting the drafting right
- The address in full, in the form the postal service would use, with the pin code — flat or shop number, building, society, road, landmark, area, city.
- The date from which you have resided there, not a vague "for a long time".
- The capacity in which you occupy — with the owner named where you are not the owner.
- Any previous address you moved from, where continuity matters, as it does for domicile and residence certificate purposes.
- A clear statement of why no bill or agreement in your name exists.
What gets these rejected
- An address written loosely — no pin code, no house number, a society name and nothing else.
- The identity document produced showing a completely different address, with the affidavit silent about the move.
- "Residing since many years." Give a month and a year.
- A landlord's consent that does not show the landlord's own title or possession of the property.
- An affidavit produced to an office that does not accept affidavits as address proof at all.
- Two family members swearing different addresses for the same household in the same season, which surfaces when both applications reach the same desk.
People are sometimes sent to a notary to manufacture a Vadodara address for a school admission quota, a job application or a category benefit. That is a false statement on oath, and the person who carries the consequence is the deponent, not the drafter. We will not draft it.
Related documents you may actually need instead
If you are a tenant, a properly drafted and stamped rent agreement is a better address proof than any affidavit and does other work for you as well. Stamp and fee
Stamp duty as currently prescribed under the Gujarat Stamp Act, 1958, confirmed at the counter and e-stamped here. The notarial fee for taking an affidavit is capped at ₹35 under Rule 10(1) of the Notaries Rules, 1956. If you cannot easily reach Chhani Jakatnaka, the Notary can attend at your address; travelling allowance is capped at ₹20 per kilometre under Rule 10(3).
What to bring
- Aadhaar and PAN card, even if they carry the old address
- Any electricity, gas or property tax bill for the premises, whoever it is in the name of
- Rent agreement or the landlord's written consent, if you are a tenant
- The owner's identity proof where the premises are not yours
- The exact address written out with the pin code
- The list of acceptable address proofs given to you by the office, if you have it
